The burden of cancer in the United States
is significant. The good news is that we are making progress in reducing overall cancer
deaths, and advocates are a part of the research process that is making a difference. Research
advocates are vital to influencing the advancement of cancer research which is finding new
and better ways to prevent, detect, and treat the disease. Research advocates are bringing
value to the research setting by: * Sharing the patient perspective with the scientific
community in a variety of forums * Building public support for research initiatives by
promoting transparency * Reviewing research proposals * Refining research questions to
increase their relevance to patients * Recruiting diverse individuals to participate in clinical
trials * Strengthening protections for people participating in research studies, and * Sharing
research results with the community in meaningful ways
