CAPS Advocates at Texas Tech University

Serving as an advocate had a pretty big impact on me because it showed me how important it is for these kids to have someone advocate for them and have someone care for them and be able to kind of help give them the skills they also taught me a lot too about what it means to be able to advocate for yourself and how important it is. I feel that this program is needed because a lot of times school personnel just has a lot on their plate and so I think it’s important for the kids to have someone outside of the school system that can come in and see their needs see the skills that they need to build on and be able to build those relationships with school personnel to help the student be able to achieve their goals. When I came down for this program it wasn’t… they took the pressure off they were not saying “go out there as a counseling student”, they were not saying too many things they expected from you, they were just saying “be an advocate, be a voice” I came in saying “okay, if someone from the community who did not study counseling can do this, I definitely can do this” so I went in there with a mindset of “I’m needed” I felt like one of the big things that was helpful for my student was just to have someone to listen to When I began serving as a CAPS advocate I actually wasn’t looking to get anything out of myself but I think that it actually has been really fun so I felt like probably the most helpful thing for him was having someone who cared about him. I think this program is so important and so vital in just being a person for these kids and helping them with skills and showing them that they matter and if you don’t do that, you know, there are consequences for their outcomes and they deserve to succeed and so that’s what this program does. Showing them that their voice mattered and that they were important really meant a lot to them and I think that, you know, a lot of them have this narrative that their not important and that they aren’t loved and so being that person for them that just shows them that love is really simple but really really impactful and they deserve that.
