3 Tools to make Science Videos for YouTube

I’ve learned a lot about the equipment
and tools needed to make science video since I made my first one way back in
2000. And I’m gonna tell you about the three main tools that I use, and
recommend and then a few things that hopefully will help you get the most out
of these. So these tools are pretty simple to use, if you practice a little
bit, but they’re very powerful and versatile and they’re not overly expensive. So the first tool is a camera to capture the visuals. The second tool
is to help you get good audio, which is actually a really important part of video production. And the last tool is the computer software it’s kind of like a cooking pot where you combine the visual and the audio ingredients to make
your video. With these three basic tools you can make everything from a simple
video where you’re narrating a sequence of slides in PowerPoint, all the way up to a more complicated video like this where you’re on screen and using different visual effects to help augment what you’re saying. Now before I tell you
about the camera I want you to keep in mind that making your own hand drawings on paper or on a digital device can also be a really good way to add visuals to
your video. But I’m gonna focus on the camera to take the photos and video clips because that’s the main tool that I use for my visuals. And for this I suggest a DSLR camera. Now you might be wondering “why not just use a cell phone’s camera?” Well you could, but the manual features on a cell phones camera are pretty limited compared with those on a DSLR camera. Now I know that the
price of a camera like this might scare some people but here’s the way I think
about it. This camera will last you for many years and it’ll give you great
images for all of your presentations and videos, and that way you don’t have to
rely so much on images that you find on the Internet where there might be a lot
of issues with copyright. Now if you’re gonna film yourself, a tripod will be critical and having a camera with a flip screen like this can also really help to get you positioned right in the camera. I also like having a remote controller for
the camera, that way I can start and stop the video and make sure that I’m in focus. Here are two more tips to help save you time with your photographs and your video clips. First, and this is very important, make sure that you back up all of your visuals so that you don’t lose them before you have
a chance to use them. And the second tip is have a good organizational system so you can quickly find your visuals when you need them. I suggest the Lightroom
software, where you can tag photographs and video clips with keywords and that
way you can easily search for them in your computer. All right now for the
audio capture tool, I suggest you get a basic digital recorder like this one. And it’ll allow you to do a lot of different things. For example, you can connect it to your computer through a USB cable to record your voice for voice over videos. But you can also connect it to a lavalier microphone like this that I’m
using to record your voice for a video where you’re too far from the camera for the cameras built-in microphone to record your voice very well. And then later when you edit the video what you’re going to do is you’ll synchronize the high quality recording from your digital recorder with the low quality
audio of your voice on the camera, and you’re going to use the high quality one for the video. And it’ll sound really good. You can also use your digital
recorder to capture background sounds that might enhance other visuals in your
video, or even interview somebody. INTERVIEWER: How are you doing? INTERVIEWEE: Pretty good mate. You know, your voice reminds me of an agricultural scientists that I’ve seen on YouTube. INTERVIEWER: Really? You’re probably right. What I also like about this digital
recorder is that you can plug it into a headset like this to monitor the quality
of the audio as you’re recording it and that way you can adjust it to make sure
that the microphone isn’t picking up any annoying sounds like the wind. [THUNDER AND RAIN] Okay, now for the last tool, the video
editor. This allows you to combine the visual and the audio ingredients to make your video. Remember that’s kind of like a cooking pot. The one that I’ve used for
most of my videos including this one is Camtasia. Now there are free editors and more expensive ones but I found that Camtasia can do everything that I need from a basic screen capture video using PowerPoint slides with cursor effects and cool animations, and even change the background using a green screen. It’s pretty cool what you can do with these three basic tools and a little bit of
creativity. So have fun getting into this new and exciting way to share your science. And I look forward to seeing you on YouTube [MUSIC]
